Abstract

The Centre for Archaeology of the University of Lisbon (UNIARQ) is a R&D organic unit of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon (FLUL), whose main scope is the study of human societies of the past in the Iberian Peninsula, extending to the rest of the world, from the first hominids to Late Antiquity and the High Middle Ages.

Here we go through the history of the origin of this Research Centre, from just before its genesis as the Algarve Archaeological Charter Project (CAALG), as a research line of the Centre for History of the University of Lisbon, until its separation, as an independent Research Centre, following a perspective that tries to approach, whenever possible, the political situation of the institutions responsible for scientific research and heritage, not forgetting the history of Archaeology teaching at the School of Arts and Humanities.
