This paper examines the evolution of the research about the occupation of Mértola (Portugal) during the 1st millennium BC between the first works of Estácio da Veiga (1877) and the most recent archaeological activities undertaken in this village and its surroundings. It provides a systematisation of the published bibliography and ongoing projects, in order to evaluate how this period was interpreted throughout the years and to provide new directions for further works.
